Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park (French: Parc National des Volcans) lies in northwestern Rwanda and borders Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and is a haven for the famous mountain gorilla.
It is also home to five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains (Karisimbi – the highest at 4507m, Bisoke with a crater lake at the peak, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo), which are covered in rainforest and bamboo.
Tracking endangered mountain gorillas here is through the mysterious old volcanoes towering almost 15,000 feet covered in the rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heathe’. The Forest has over 200 species of colorful birds and the rare golden monkey, a truly unique experience in the area.
On the edge of the park is Buhanga Eco-Park, an ancient forest holding Rwanda’s most intriguing folklore and Musanze Caves, formed 62 million years ago after the last estimated volcanic eruption.
